On November 30, 2018 the Governor’s Commission on School Safety final report was released to the public. The report included the findings and recommendations of the commission on the best ways to keep our children safe when attending school. One of the recommendations was to have an armed presence on campus whenever children are present and at major extra curricular activities.
School districts in Arkansas have been deciding on the best ways to bring armed officers into the schools. If an individual has the great responsibility of carrying a firearm in a school, the districts want the best-trained professionals possible to handle this important task. Many school districts are seeking out qualified Commissioned School Safety Officers (CSSO) and training programs to certify staff, teachers, and administrators as CSSOs.
The professional trainers at SRTS, Inc. are ready to help school districts plan, implement, and maintain active CSSO programs. Along with putting CSSOs in schools, the final report recommended a selection process and training program that goes above the minimum standards required. Classes offered through SRTS, Inc. exceed the minimum standards and help your CSSO become proficient in their skills to respond to an active threat at the school.
Commissioned School Safety Officer Certification
The current standards for the certification of a CSSO includes three phases of training. These phases take you through 8 hours of Phase I to become a Private Security Officer, 16 hours of Phase II to qualify you as a Certified Security Officer, and 36 hours of Phase III to become a Certified Commissioned School Security Officer. Arkansas requires a CSSO to complete 60 hours of training.
ACT 393 mandates the training requirements and include the following topics, legal limitations on the use of firearms and on the powers and authority of a CSSO, arrests and detentions, use of deadly force and Arkansas law, field note taking and report writing, weapons and fundamental firearm safety, live fire training, marksmanship, firearms qualifications course, active shooter training, incorporating security response with law enforcement, active shooter simulations, defensive tactics, trauma care, wound management, CPR / AED, and many other topics. The training is designed to give your CSSO the knowledge and skills necessary to make good decisions during a high stress, critical incident.
SRTS, Inc. wants the best trained security officers standing watch over our children. If you want the most prepared, best trained CSSO to respond to a critical incident at your school, SRTS, Inc. is dedicated to this goal.
